Dr. James Deary, one of the founders of the Institute for Family Health, is an educator and psychologist. He is responsible for curriculum development and continuing education programs for staff physicians, nurses, and residents - programs that keep staff and administrators abreast of the rapidly changing health environment in New York City.
In 2006, Dr. Deary was promoted to Senior Vice President, with responsibility for human resources and professional development. He leads the New York Center for Professional Development, which offers training to other organizations in organization development, diversity, management skills building, and strategic planning.
Dr. Deary has been active in educational program development since 1969. During the 1970's he was responsible for the development of educational sites and programs for Mobil Oil in England and the Canary Islands, Spain, where he co-founded a school and served as Headmaster to a student body representative of 23 countries. Beginning in 1984, Dr. Deary served as coordinator of faculty development and behavioral sciences at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital. Today, this program, now based at the Institute, is the longest running federally-funded grant program in the country, serving faculty from twenty family medicine departments in the tri-state area.
The faculty development program has led organizational development efforts from Maine to Puerto Rico. Most recently, Dr. Deary served as educational consultant to the Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANYS), the State University Nursing and Mid-Wifery Schools, the New York State Academy of Family Physicians and the New York State AHEC (Area Health Education Center).
Dr. Deary holds two graduate degrees in psychology and counseling, a doctorate in educational management, and has post-doctoral training in family therapy. His experience, master's research in moral development, and doctoral thesis in decision making have been vital to the Institute in areas of strategic planning, human resources, and management.
