Summer Health Internship Programs (SHIP)

Summer Internships (Mid-July to Mid-August)
The AHEC Summer Health Internship Programs (SHIP) matches high school and college students who are underrepresented in the health professions with healthcare providers in their communities for six-week internships. Internships are 15-20 hours per week; and stipends are available.

These internships are for:

High School Students
Undergraduate/Pre-Med College Students in their 1st and 2nd year

High school and college students will:

  • Learn about health professions
  • Learn about the health issues affecting their community
  • Develop lasting relationships with preceptors/mentors
  • Understand the steps to pursuing a health career
  • Attend seminars with health professionals
  • “Shadow” health professionals on the job
  • Work on health research projects
  • Participate in public health education programs

The SHIP programs are run by the Bronx-Westchester AHEC, the Brooklyn-Queens-Long Island AHEC, and the Manhattan-Staten Island AHEC. Please select the office nearest your home and contact them for more information. Or, you may download and fill out an application; there is a separate application for each program.
