About therapy
During weekly sessions, your therapist will help you understand the problems that caused you to seek therapy and find ways to empower you to change. Sometimes, we cannot change the things that cause stress in our lives, but we can learn to change the way we feel or the way we react to stress.

Your treatment plan
At your first meeting, your therapist will want to know all about your background, your current life situation, and about the important people in your life. With your therapist's guidance, you will decide on a treatment plan based on your goals.

Setting goals
Your therapist will listen, encourage, and challenge you to meet your goals. It is also important to have reviews to evaluate progress, to identify any new problems, or to decide that you are ready to end therapy.

Adult therapy techniques
Different people are helped by different strategies. Here are some ways that your therapist might work with you:

1- You and your therapist will talk about your problems and identify actions you can take to overcome them. Your therapist will help you to take small steps that are within your power to accomplish. (Problem-solving therapy.)

2- Your therapist will help you understand how your own thoughts create your good or bad feelings. (Cognitive therapy.)

3- Your therapist may decide that looking at the past in detail will help you understand why things are the way they are in the present. (Psychodynamic therapy.)

Play therapy for children
Therapists use toys, games, and props to help children express themselves and understand their feelings. Children learn skills such as patience, paying attention, and how to get along with others.

Confidentiality
Confidentiality is a concern for everyone. Information from therapy cannot be given to anyone without a patient's written permission, except when a patient has threatened to harm themself or someone else, or, in some court cases that involve the patient. Please ask for a copy of our Confidentiality Statement when you visit.

Psychiatry and medication
If your therapist feels that you could be helped by medication, you will have an appointment with a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist may recommend prescription medication for you. In that case, you will have follow-up visits to make sure that the medication is helping you.
