Washington Irving High School
Health Center
Washington Irving High School Health Center provides health care, mental health and social work services for students and their families. All services are free to students who do not have health insurance and every effort is made to enroll students into an insurance program. Students come from Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. For many students, the health center provides an essential service: many do not have a primary care doctor, either because they live in areas with few doctors, they do not have insurance, or parents are not able to take them for care.
The center also has mentoring programs to increase student’s awareness of careers in health care.
The health center staff works closely with the school community – administration, teachers, parents, and students. Since the health center opened, there has been a decrease in the number of students sent to an emergency room or picked up from school by a parent.
All services are completely confidential. Our staff is sensitive to the needs of teenagers who desire independence and may have some distrust of authority. Students must have a parent’s consent to enroll; but student’s health information may not be shared with the school or parents unless there is a serious threat to the student’s health or life.
Our health center receives funding from the NYS Department of Health and the Federal Public Health Service.
The health center is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 4:30. At other times, students and their families are invited to visit any of the Institute's other health centers.
