WIC
WIC is a special nutrition education program that offers free, healthy foods to women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or just had a baby, and to children from 0 to 5 years of age. It is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture and administered in New York by the New York State Department of Health.
What can you get at WIC?
- At WIC you get checks to buy healthy foods such as milk, eggs, bread, cereal, juice, peanut butter, beans, rice, infant formula, and baby food.
- You will get information from a nutritionist to help you and your family eat well and be healthy.
- You will receive support and information about breastfeeding your baby.
- You will get help finding services such as Food Stamps, Medicaid, Immunizations, places to get vaccines for your children, and emergency numbers.
Who can apply for WIC?
To apply for WIC you must:
- Be a woman who is pregnant, breastfeeding or have a new baby less then one year old, OR be a child between 0 and 5 years old.
- Live in New York State.
- You must meet income guidelines set by the government. If you already receive Medicaid, food stamps or Temporary Assistance for Needed Families (TANF), you can apply.
- You must be at risk of a poor diet or have a medical condition.
