Rosa Rosen
Director, Diabetes Education and Training, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
Rosa Rosen was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to the United States in 1982. She is a graduate of the Center for Legal Studies at the City University of New York, and has a law degree from the School of Law at Hofstra University.
In 1997, while working in the legal field, Ms. Rosen was diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes. Despite the fact that seven women in her family were living with diabetes or had died from complications of this condition, Ms. Rosen knew nothing about the illness. While learning about the disease she discovered that though Latinos face a higher risk of developing diabetes, there was very little culturally relevant information available for Latinos at the time. She became a volunteer and advocate for diabetes education and founded The Latino Education Project, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate Latinos with diabetes from their own cultural perspective. She also founded
Diabetes & Nutrition, a newspaper that informs and educates people with diabetes, now in its seventh year and published in English and Spanish.
Ms. Rosen became a full-time diabetes educator in 2003. Her experience includes work with the American Diabetes Association and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She has received extensive training as a diabetes educator and speaks to audiences about her experiences as a diabetic and how to live healthy with the disease. She is an invaluable member of the Bronx Health REACH Coalition, working with the Faith-based Outreach Initiative, providing diabetes workshops to both health coordinators and congregants. She also serves on the Community Research Committee of the project.
