Welcome to Bronx Health REACH
For the past seven years, we have been working together as a community coalition to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities. With leadership from the Institute for Family Health, the support of many funding sources and the involvement of thousands of our neighbors, we’re creating change to make health equality a reality. Recently we were named a National Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities so we can continue to expand our advocacy and education efforts city and state-wide.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 featured Bronx Civil Rights Complaint against 3 NYC Teaching Hospitals
Please check the following link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8j51CYlSFRQ for CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 piece featuring Bronx Health REACH. In the piece, Dr. Sanjay Gupta addresses racial discrimination that results from separate and unequal care provided by private teaching hospitals in New York City.
The story focus on a civil rights complaint filed with New York State Office of the Attorney General in June 2008 on behalf of Bronx Health REACH, a coalition of 40 community and faith-based organizations led by the Institute for Family Health. The complaint was filed by New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) based on the out-patient referral practices of three NYC hospitals – Montefiore, NY Presbyterian, and Mt. Sinai.
Dr. Gupta made several visits to New York with his producer and film crews to interview faith leaders, patients, and REACH staff to bring this issue to light. For more information about the back story, visit http://neilcalman.blogspot.com or http://bronxhealthreach.blogspot.com
CAMPAIGN TO END DISCRIMINATION IN HEALTH CARE
Our survey has confirmed what many of us already knew – New York City private teaching hospitals separate patients based on insurance status into two separate and unequal systems of care!
REACH NAMED A CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR THE ELIMINATION OF HEALTH DISPARITIES
Making Health Equality a Reality
Here in the Bronx, we’ve got strong opinions about health equality. For some, it means a health system that provides equal treatment. For others, it means having the ability to live a healthier life. For all, it means the same opportunity for better health and the kind of health outcomes that are enjoyed by others. And here, making health equality a reality means everyone does their part.
Changing Systems/Changing Communities
Bronx Health REACH is working to challenge health disparity by changing the systems, processes and environment that promote it. This includes working with faith-based organizations and businesses, the health system and policy-makers. And, mobilizing the community to create and make healthy change. We’re working to ensure that everyone in the Bronx has the opportunity, the ability-and the motivation-to lead healthier lives.
